Thinking about Acoustics

Chris Ickler (Chris-at-Bose) is a wonderful thinker and I would like to share a little of his gift with you today.

In response to: "where and how is the best way to place the B1; single, double, and quad" (on the Bose Musicians Community Message Boards), Chris replied:
... the short but annoying answer is of course, "it depends" and the slightly longer, but still unsatisfying answer is, "results will vary from case to case in ways that even the best acousticians can't anticipate." But you'll often find recommendations on the web or even in technical journals by folks who have only considered a subset of the factors that contribute. The authors may not know about the other factors or, more likely, they may be hoping that those other factors can be ignored. The temptation to extrapolate beyond the part that one grasps is almost irresistible. Hope springs eternal. One wants to give a satisfying answer, even when it is out of reach.
Read the rest of his article in the wiki entry B1 Bass Module / Positioning. This  is  a wonderful collection of advice that many of us could put into practice immediately.

But after reading the article, I was particularly enthralled by this one statement from the his introduction to the article (above). It bears repeating.
The temptation to extrapolate beyond the part that one grasps is almost irresistible.
Yes, I have fallen prey to the temptation from time to time, but I will be more vigilant for having read this. Let me encourage you to do the same.

The Bose® L1™ Wiki

The Bose® L1™ Wiki is up and running.

This is the home of Unofficial Guides for Bose L1™ System Users and Performers.
This is a new way to work with the knowledge that we have been building on the Bose® Musicians Community Discussion Boards. We are building a relatively stable repository of knowledge that complements the Discussion Boards.

Although it looks like Wikipedia, because it is using the same software (Mediawiki), there are some philosophical differences. The Bose® L1™ Wiki is about the experience of Bose L1™ System Users and Performers. That includes articles unfettered by the Wikipedia "Neutral Point of View" principle. We also have the latitude to explore Original Research that might not be acceptable within the Wikipedia principles. This is because in many respects we are experiencing and sharing live music in new ways.

So now you have a couple of ways to learn and share your knowledge about the L1™:
Enjoy!
